dLog

The dLog die is not a concept. This is a real dice that exists. You can acquire it and use it. It is currently funding on Kickstarter. But stop, don't run off thinking this is an ad. This is itch.io, and that would not be cool. I'm adding this to itch to enter the https://itch.io/jam/ttrpg-tools-jam because the dLog is the best die for TTRPGs. This submission explains how to use a dice spinner and how to use a dLog in your games.

Using a Dice Spinner

This is the easy part.

Using a dLog

The dLog (or logarithmic dice) has numbers from 1.0 to 9.9. To keep it simple, you can say they go from 1 to 9. Not quite a d10, not quite a d8, but also not like a d9. You see, in a normal die, the probability of any result is equal. On a d6, the chance to roll any number is 1/6. This is not the case with a dLog. As you can see, the chance of rolling a 1 is greater than the chance of rolling a 9. You can see that the gap between the 1 and the 2 is huge compared with the gap between the 9 and the 1.

So high rolls are rare, and low rolls are much more common. You might think you roll this way when you roll a d20. Well, we simply value a 20 more than a 1. Statistically, all sides get rolled just as often. Meaning that they are equal in rarity. Not so with a dLog. High numbers are truly less likely to be rolled.

Aim, FIRE!

The target is 900 feet away, you need to roll a 9 to hit them.
The target is 100 feet away, you need to roll a 1 or higher to hit them.

Oh no, FIRE!

Your dLog result reveals how much of this scroll remains readable after being saved from the fire. Gabriel, backer.

You are FIRED!

How many months of severance pay do you get? Roll a dLog and divide by 2.

The basic premise of the dLog is that high results are TRULY rare. This is why I think that, in the right hands, the dLog is the best die in all of TTRPG.
